Going home after hospital: arranging the ride home well
The discharge date is set, the exact time often is not. How relatives plan the ride home from hospital or rehab, what comes along and who helps.

First check: is a seated ride possible?
Our patient transport is for people who can sit on their own and need some help getting in and out. They travel in a regular vehicle. It is not medical transport and not an ambulance service; there is no medical care on the way. We do not currently have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle; if you can move from the wheelchair onto a vehicle seat, you are welcome.
If in doubt, ask the ward whether a seated ride home is suitable. If someone has to travel lying down or sitting in a wheelchair, a specialised service is the right choice.
The time: preferably on call
On the day of discharge, the doctor's round, the discharge talk or medication often get in the way. The exact time is therefore rarely certain. Two options:
- On call: you register the ride with the date. As soon as the discharge is settled, call us: 076 225 23 23. We pick up subject to availability.
- Fixed time: if the ward gives you a time, we confirm exactly that time. If there are delays, we charge additional waiting time according to the tariff (CHF 65.00 per hour).
What to include in the request
- Hospital or clinic with the department and the entrance where we should wait.
- Destination address, for an apartment building with the floor and whether there is a lift.
- Name and phone number of the person going home. If you are booking as a relative, choose «For someone else».
- Aids and luggage: rollator, folding wheelchair, bag or suitcase. We take them along as far as there is space.
- Support: whether help getting out and accompaniment to the front door are needed.
What the driver does
We pick up at the agreed entrance, load the luggage into the vehicle, help with getting in and out and, as agreed, accompany the passenger to the front door. If someone still needs help at home, plan for a person to be there; we do not provide nursing support.
When the clinic books the ride
Some clinics offer their patients the ride home. In that case the ward, the social services or the patient administration places the order, and the invoice goes to the clinic. Ask during the discharge talk whether this applies to you.
And the costs?
We charge the ride according to the tariff; you see the estimate when you make the request. Please check directly with your health insurer or insurance whether they cover part of it. We cannot promise that costs will be covered. On request we issue a ride confirmation for your records.
